If you lose your passport
What to do, step by step, if your passport is lost or stolen in Korea. A new passport or an emergency travel document is issued by your own embassy or consulate.
- Report the loss to the police
Go to the nearest police station or police box and report the lost passport. Ask for the loss report receipt (police report) and keep the reference number printed on it.
- If it was stolen, say so
If someone took your passport, report it to the police as a theft rather than a simple loss. If you are in danger right now, call 112.
- Contact your embassy or consulate
Contact your country’s embassy or consulate in Korea and apply for a new passport or an emergency travel document. Follow the mission’s instructions on documents, appointments and how long it takes.
Find your embassy or consulate - Check your travel document before you fly
You leave Korea through departure immigration with a valid passport. If you are flying on an emergency travel document, also check that your airline and any transit country accept it. Questions about departure immigration can go to 1345.
- If you hold a residence card
If you live in Korea and are registered as a foreign resident, report the new passport number, issue date and expiry date within 15 days. This does not apply to short-stay tourists.
